Dr. Moolchan began his career as a clinician in both pediatrics and adult addiction medicine. He then held teaching positions and became the Director of the DC AIDS Education and Training Center at Howard University in 1993.

In his current NIH role, Dr. Moolchan develops and oversees research protocols with a primary focus on nicotine and tobacco and a secondary focus on other drugs of abuse (i.e., cocaine, opioids and marijuana) through various collaborations. At TTARC, he leads transdisciplinary (biobehavioral and psychosocial) research that examines adolescent tobacco dependence and its treatment. In association with the NCI Tobacco Related Health Disparities Network, he is exploring the integration of findings relevant to addressing health disparities due to tobacco. Dr. Moolchan maintains a commitment to active mentoring of aspiring and junior scientists.

Dr. Moolchan is the recipient of the 2002 NIH Director's Award of Merit for leadership, creativity and innovativeness, along with several NIDA Director Special Performance Awards for creating opportunities for NIDA to focus clinical treatment research on an underserved population and skillfully providing mentoring to physicians aspiring to scientific careers. He was awarded the first Prize in the 1993 National Leadership Forum on the Black Child-A by the American Institute for Urban Psychological Studies.

Among his recent publications, which span a wide range of disciplines such as addiction, pediatrics, psychiatry and pharmacology, are pioneering reports on adolescent nicotine metabolism and the use of nicotine replacement therapy for tobacco-dependent adolescent smokers.
