After receiving his B.S. in Psychology from the University of Washington, he worked for the Seattle/King Country Department of Public Health and the Seattle Urban League as a Community Health Outreach Worker for hypertension prevention in low-income Seattle neighborhoods.

He then went on to receive his MPH in Biometry/Epidemiology and PhD in Preventive Medicine-Health Behavior Research from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where he was also a member of the Pacific Rim Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center. Dr. Trinidad's work at USC focused on exploring the role of emotional intelligence on adolescent health behaviors, and one's culture and acculturation on adolescent smoking.

Since joining UCSD, Dr. Trinidad was awarded a New Investigator Award from the Tobacco Related Diseases Research Program of the University of California Office of the President to investigate the differential effects of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement between the state Attorneys General and the tobacco industry across various racial/ethnic groups in California. He was also recently awarded a Minority Supplement from the Comprehensive Minority Biomedical Branch of the National Cancer Institute to examine the effects of a telephone counseling intervention for parents to reduce adolescent problem behaviors, including smoking, among racial/ethnic minorities. He has also been involved with the Independent Evaluation of the California Tobacco Control Program, and is a co-author of the California Department of Health Services reports of the California Tobacco Surveys.
